Dear National Blood Service. Please stop calling me asking me to donate blood. I would.. But you see, Im not allowed. Because ive had sex with another male. Which is stupid. kaythxbai

Can someone help fill me in on this. All I know is that its due to homosexuals having a higher chance of carrying AIDS and HIV and they're paranoid about both (understandably) they say none can donate..

But.. This doesn't add up in my mind. To me.. Just because there is a higher chance.. They ban all gays? Thought blood could be scanned and checked for any problems? Isn't it a little bit of discrimination?

Note I've made this topic as I'd want more information about this as I can't work out why gays can't donate blood which is... needed, lets be honest about that.

It's just the AIDS thing. Back in the 80's it was a huge thing that homosexual men had AIDS, and they never changed the policy. Really, you can just lie.

It is an old policy that hasn't been changed.  I cannot give blood as I have had a tattoo in the last year and been out of the country, they call me, I politely say, "Sorry, don't meet guidelines".  They respond, "Thanks for letting us know"...

If I recall Scotland's blood service has recently lifted the lifetime ban of homosexuals from donating blood, I don't know if it's the same in England and Wales, but there are definitely calls to repeal it.

it is about HIV, because the thinner lining of the anal lumen means it's easier for a lot of pathogens to be transmitted into the bloodstream of the other person. so this puts them at a higher risk category and i think the idea was they didn't want to waste the time and resources of blood donation from someone who was at a very high risk and end up having to throw the blood out.

back in the day it used to be a much bigger problem, because of limited knowledge about the virus and about sexual health in general. blood is scanned every time you donate, to look for things like HCV, HBV, HIV so i think the worry is rather unnecessary these days.

It's an old policy from back in '85 the day when AIDs was considered a gay people thing (the disorder was originally known as GRID--gay related immune deficiency). Most major health organizations dealing with blood donation have stated that the policy is obsolete, unnecessary, and without scientific foundation, but so far it hasn't been changed.

It's just an outdated policy that needs to be changed.

I actually heard somewhere that african american women have the highest AIDS rate now. but idk if that's actually true.

When I gave blood years ago, you have to fill out a paper, that is nothing more than a barcode.  It asks if you feel your blood is safe to use  They do it so people who know they are diseased still give blood, that is disgarded.  They said it is so people who have friend's pressue them to do it with them, don't have to say "No, I have AIDS", they can just let the collection center dispose of the blood.

true, i didn't specify that, just that they lifted the lifetime ban which they do not have anymore.

As a female, if I engage with sexual acts with a male who has also ever engaged in sexual acts with another male, my blood will be discarded.

This is quite annoying to many of my female friends.
