I know that the East (aside from Berlin and Barvaria) are generally poorer than a West, mostly because the East's economy was fubared before the reunifcation, and then a lot of people (including the ones in business) left for the richer West after the rich, so it never really got fixed. I get the impression that the East is where most of the neo-Nazis are based, too. I also know that Germany has a rich and influential film industry, going back to the Weimar Republic in the 20s, and that during the 40s and 50s, many great people in the industry in Hollywood were actually Germans who had left because of the Nazis.
The same goes for literature but it goes back way further, to Goethe and the like. Also, Gunther Grass was known as a prominent anti-Nazi author, until it turned out he'd actually been a member of the tank division in the SS.
@Joule Hitler was from Austria, and despite fighting in the German army in WW1, was actually an illegal immigrant until he somehow got a citizenship. Ironically enough, one of the first parties he banned was responsible for Munich's decision not to deport him (and they still didn't deport him after he tried to stage a coup).
