why do people assume africans and carribeans are black?

I'm wondering? Like my mom's family is from mauritius a southern african island. And my dad is from trinidad. I don't consider myself black but my mom is technically african american. We have very dark skin like black people but that's it. People don't understand it seems that there are other races. Most mauritians and trinidadians aren't even black. So why is this assumption rampant? People just assume since I'm dark skinned and I have family from africa I'm black when I'm not. Why don't people realize this??

most trinidadians and mauritians are ethnicity the same as indian v. The stereotypical african. But we can get pretty dark therefore is why I'm dark skinned med brown for racial black people. That's what I meant. And anyway my question is why do people assume africans and carribeans are a certain race when they're not.
